A few changes at 168 hours

Over the holidays, I've had a bit of time to think about my blog and what direction I want to take it in this year.  I think most of the changes won't really be that noticeable, but I thought I should share what I'm thinking.

The first change is to do with how the internet and social networking media have been evolving.  I'm planning on using facebook a lot more as a means to direct traffic to my blog.  I have set up a 168 hours facebook page which you can 'like' (see the sidebar!) and receive a link when I update my blog.  While most people who read 168 hours these days subscribe to my blog by email or in a reader, having a way of following it on facebook will mean that those who don't use a reader won't have to check my blog all the time to see if I've updated it.  This may mean I won't update once a day (well once a weekday anyway) but I'm not sure.  It will certainly reduce the pressure to update every day which I think I'll be thankful for come June.  : )

The other change is to do with the assumptions I'll be making about who I'm writing for.  Up till now, I have always done the blog with the assumption that I'm writing for a readership made up mainly of Christian women with young kids (since that is my own situation and the vantage point from which I reflect on life). I'm thinking now, however, that I might recalibrate that assumption a little.  My own situation won't be changing: still loving and following Jesus, still wanting to want to keep reflecting on how faith in Jesus affects the everyday details of life, still looking after young kids at home (and the new baby we're expecting in June means that will continue to be the case for a good while yet!).  But I'm hoping from now on to take a little more account of the fact that not all of the people who find their way onto the blog are coming from exactly the same vantage point.  I'll keep being up-front about my own beliefs and convictions, and I'll keep writing about the things that interest and concern me as a mother of young kids, but I'll be trying a little bit harder to make things accessible and transparent for people who aren't (yet!) Christians or whose life situation is different from mine.  We'll see how it goes!

Hi Nicole

Your plans sound great and should lead to your excellent posts encouraging many more Christian woman and reaching out to non-Christians. I have always found your blog posts accessible and transparent despite being in a very different life situation to you, as a single Christian women living on the opposite side of the world in the UK, who spends most of my week away from home working full time in an office in central London and commuting for three or more hours each day.

It's great to have a focus, Nicole.

Your blog is well-written and interesting and always has something in it to interest this quinquagenarian grandfather.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with the blogosphere.

Sounds great Nicole. The facebook page idea works really well. Pretty much everyone is on facebook these days and it is a great way to update those friends and family who aren't really into reading blogs, while avoiding bombarding your facebook friends who haven't expressed interest (eg chosen to "like")your page

Sounds really good and I'm keen to see how it goes. I've often wondered how non-Christians and people of other faiths would respond to my blog posts were they to bother with them - particularly those related to evangelism. Widening your target audience will be a worthy challenge!
