Hermit crab food?

As I've already mentioned we've recently acquired some hermit crabs in our family. The first two didn't fare too well with our cold summer nights, so we're up to our 3rd and 4th ones now (along with a heat pad to warm up their little home). Jacob and I have become quite attached to them and enjoy looking after them together - changing their food and water and giving them their little salt baths.

A funny thing happened yesterday when he came home from school and as he sat down he said in a horrified tone:

"Mummy, you gave me hermit crab food for morning tea today".

Now, I do have a tendency to be a bit scatterbrained from time to time, and I have been fighting a cold that has been making my head feel slightly fuzzy, so my heart skipped a beat. What had I done? Inwardly panicking a little, I fought the urge to ask him if he told his teacher about my failings and instead calmly asked him "What do you mean I gave you hermit crab food, darling?".

Jacob: "You gave me that stuff that we give to the hermit crabs - with the sultanas and the other bits".

And then I realised that he wasn't talking about the awful little black pellets that we feed to them, he was talking about the mixed fruit that we also feed them from time to time. I usually give him those little boxes of sultanas for morning tea, and this week I thought I'd give him a change and send along little packets of apple and sultana. I hadn't even thought about the fact that they're exactly the same as the ones we give to little Crazy and Bumpy (that's the names of hermit crabs nos. 3 and 4).

Phew. Of course, it probably is just a matter of time before I do send along hermit crab food!
